Martin graduated in organic
chemistry from Carleton University in Ottawa,
Canada, in 1955 and then was trained as a
patent agent at the predecessor firm of
Gowling, Lafleur & Henderson. He became
qualified as a patent agent for Canada &
U.S.A. in 1957 and as a trade-mark agent for
Canada in 1970. He was the founder in 1970 of
Marcus & Associates , a successor of
Johnson, Marcus & Wray, which was founded
in 1967.
Marcus & Associates merged
with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP in 2000. Martin
retired from that firm in 2003. Since Martin
entered the patent and trademark profession in
1955, he has lectured extensively on Canadian
Patent and Trade-mark Law in Canada to various
Universities, in the United States to regional
patent bar organizations, as well as to patent
practitioners in England, France, Denmark,
Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, Korea, Singapore,
Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Martin has prepared and
successfully prosecuted patent and trademark
applications in Canada, USA, Eastern &
Western Europe, Australia, Japan, Taiwan and
South America. His areas of expertise include
chemical, pharmaceutical, biotech, pulp and
paper and mechanical technologies. He has
served on the Patents Joint Liaison Committee
(1960-1965), the Patent Examination Board and
has been a tutor for claim drafting section of
the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada
patent agent training course at McGill
University, and for the Canadian group of the
International Federation of Intellectual
Property Attorneys (FICPI). Among his
professional affiliations are: Fellow of the
Chemical Institute of Canada, Member of the
American Chemical Society and Fellow of the
Intellectual Property Institute of Canada
