Internet Stewardship

On September 30, the USA will cease its oversight of the Internet by ending its contract with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) which maintains domain names. Operating under government oversight, anti-trust laws do not apply to ICANN, and ICANN would like to uphold this anti-trust exemption status by looking to other governments or the United Nations International Telecommunication Union (ITU).  Critics worry that authoritarian regimes could oversee the Internet and limit their citizens’ access. Proponents believe these fears are overstated and the people’s daily Internet use would not be impacted.
