Brexit’s impact on patent registration

Large political changes frequently impact people’s daily lives and Brexit is no exception to this phenomena. In 2013, EU member states signed the Unified Patent Court Agreement which created a Unified Patent Court, allowing for a single patent registration system for member states. The UK planned to ratify the Agreement this autumn (13 member states are required) and even purchased land for a UPC residence in London. However, Brexit  affects this plan. Britain could potentially be excluded from the unitary patent system but some argue since the UK does not technically leave the EU till 2018, the UK could still ratify the argument. The path of action taken will be interesting to watch.
